We knew it was coming, we just didn't know when. That when is today. After Hyundai announced that their Genesis nameplate would become its luxury brand, there has been talk of an appropriate model, deserving of the title of top-of-the-line. The Hyundai Genesis as we know it today is a great start, but in order to receive the "luxury manufacturer" badge, Genesis also needed a broader lineup and a model capable of going up against the German and Japanese flahships. The answer is the Genesis G90.
The luxury sedan sports an elegant yet familiar design that vaguely reminds us of the all-new Sonata and a lot of the Hyundai Genesis (soon to be Genesis G70), but with just enough chrome for an added premium feel. The strong lines are inspired by the "Athletic Elegance" design style, applied inside and out by Hyundai's new "Prestige Design Division". The cockpit's design has been driver-centred to ensure a superior driving experience and first-class comfort.
The G90 will come equipped with features such as Genesis Smart Sense, a suite of advanced technologies that includes the smart cruise control and lane keep assist, among other things. That's without considering the flight of entertainment and comfort features the sedan will pack.
The G90 will be offered with three powertrain options: an all-new 3.3L V6 turbo rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, as well as the familiar 3.8L V6 and 5.0L V8, teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. If the G90 comes as a standard rear-wheel-drive model, Hyundai, or should I say Genesis also announced that the G90 would be available with an H-TRAC all-wheel drive system with adaptive control suspension. Equipped with the V8, the luxury sedan will run the 0-100 in 5.7 seconds.
Considering the Genesis-turned-G70 is already a great sedan, it hints at the potential the manufacturer has at producing high quality, luxury cars. Let's now see how well the all-new G90 will capture the hearts of consumers in the rarefied air of the high-end sedan segment.
