Hot on the heels of another Takata airbag recall, this time from Ford, automotive supplier Continental Automotive Systems has reported to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration that they are recalling 5 million potentially defective airbag control units supplied to Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and others worldwide. A complete list of manufacturers was not yet available.
Continental told the NHTSA that the units were manufactured between 2006 and 2010 and that they may fail and cause the airbags to inadvertently inflate, or may fail to deploy in the event of a crash.
Mary Arraf, spokesperson for Continental Automotive stated that the recall involved between 1.5 and 2 million cars in the U.S. The number of Canadian cars affected was not immediately available. Continental is the supplier, so can recall the parts, but automakers are responsible for recalling the vehicles involved.
Honda Canada has stated that they are recalling 23,343 2008-2010 Accord Sedans affected by the issue, with parts availability expected in Fall 2016. Owners are advised to contact their dealer immediately if an SRS light is present.
Fiat Chrysler is recalling over 112,000 2009 Dodge Journey crossovers, 2009 Grand Caravan and Town and Country minivans as well as 2009 Volkswagen Routan vans.
Fiat Chrysler has also reported they are aware of as many as 25 inadvertent airbag deployments. The investigation by the NHTSA was opened in August of last year after a crash involving a 2008 Accord in which the air bags failed to deploy. Continental became aware of a potential issue in 2011 when reports of inadvertent deployments were reported in two vehicles. One from Daimler and one from Chrysler.
