Journalists from across Canada meet yearly at the AJAC TestFest in late October to evaluate all eligible vehicles in back-to-back testing. This includes public road, real-world driving as well as track and instrumented testing.

Vehicles are rated on a 0-10 scale in 21 categories, including acceleration, braking, dynamics, and handling as well as safety features and cargo capacity.

In addition to Car and Utility vehicle of the year, class winners are picked for nine other classes, including best new small car, family car, sports and performance, SUV/CUV and pickup.
