World Car of the Year finalists announced in Geneva

The jury behind the World Car of the Year awards have announced the finalists for the 2016 edition of its annual prize program.

As usual, there will be one overall winner, with four other vehicles voted as tops in other categories.

Finalists for the overall prize are the Audi A4, the Mazda MX-5 roadster, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class crossover.

World Luxury Car candidates are the Audi Q7, BMW's 7 Series, and the Volvo XC90, while World Performance Car contenders are the Audi R8, Honda Civic Type R, and the Mercedes-AMG C 63 coupe.

Candidates for the 2016 World Green Car prize include the Chevrolet Volt, and a pair of Toyotas: the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car, and the Prius.

Finally, in the running for the 2016 World Car Design of the Year are the Jaguar XE, and a couple of more affordable (pleasant) surprises: the Mazda MX-5 (the only car up for more than one prize), and the CX-3 subcompact crossover.

Winners will be announced on March 24 at the New York auto show.
