The competition for Canada's cheapest car is heating up. After seeing Nissan's success with the $9,998 Micra in S trim, Mitsubishi's desire to move Mirages has resulted in a new cheapest new car in Canada. The Micra sold 11,909 units in Canada (and it is not available in the United States) in its first full year on the market, while Mirage sales have declined from 4048 in 2014 to 3361 in 2015 and a slow start in 2016.
Mitsubishi has answered with a $3,500 incentive on all Mirages, bringing the base ES five-speed manual down to $8,998 plus taxes and freight. Mitsubishi is skipping the 2016 model year due to oversupply, so there's likely to be a strong desire by dealers to move metal, with a G4 Sedan arriving this spring to bolster the lineup. A fully equipped SE model would be $12,498 with a five-speed manual or $13,698 with a CVT.
But Mitsubishi and Nissan aren't the only players in the under-$10K market – Hyundai currently offers its larger 2016 Elantra, sporting a manual transmission and lacking A/C in L trim, starting at $9,999 before taxes and freight, in anticipation of an all-new 2017 Elantra soon to hit showrooms.
