After the debut of the all-new 10th generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the Detroit auto show earlier this year, expectations were high for the AMG version. Mercedes-AMG has confirmed details about the new E 43 4Matic and stated that it will be featured at the New York International Auto Show at the end of March.
The E 43 will feature a twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 making 401 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, attached to a 9-speed automatic transmission with Sport, Sport Plus, Eco and Manual modes. It will have an AMG 4Matic system with a 31/69 front to rear torque split. This will move the 1,765 kg car from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The system is also fitted with an Eco mode and a start/stop system that can shut off the engine in certain situations to improve emissions and economy. This will engage when stopped, like at a red light, but will also engage and decouple the engine from the transmission when coasting at highway speeds. Mercedes claims that the Eco mode will allow the E 43 to achieve 8.3 L/100 km combined in the Euro fuel economy cycle (expect our rating to land a bit higher and real world use, well, a lot higher).
Other AMG hardware includes speed sensitive variable ratio steering with two modes (Comfort and Sport), 360 mm brakes front and rear, 19-inch wheels, and unique microfibre AMG sport seats with red seat belts. The suspension has been fitted with stiffer knuckles and joints, reducing unwanted suspension movement and improving handling. The E 43 is also fitted with Air Body Control, an adaptive air suspension with Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes tailoring ride and handling to your desired level. Combined with multiple steering ratios, transmission modes, and Eco mode, the driving experience is highly customizable. A special AMG body kit with rear diffuser and spoiler will also come standard.
The Mercedes-AMG E43 4Matic opens for orders in June, and should begin arriving at dealers in September of this year.
