Mazda has announced that its redesigned mid-size CX-9 crossover will carry a starting MSRP of $35,300 when it goes on sale across Canada in June.
That price -- a $1,305 increase over the 2015 CX-9 -- applies to a model wearing a familiar GS trim level that will come with standard 18-inch wheels, auto-levelling LED headlights, LED taillights, electric parking brake, push-button start, Mazda Connect with seven-inch display and HMI commander, backup camera, heated front seats, eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar, tri-zone automatic climate control, and rear-seat climate control display. It gets front-wheel drive powered by Mazda's new 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine (making up to 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane fuel) and a standard six-speed automatic transmission.
Next up is the $41,500 GS-L, which adds a sunroof, leather upholstery in black or beige, four-way power front passenger seat, power tailgate, intelligent keyless entry, and rain-sensing wipers. GS-L models also get some of Mazda's i-Activesense safety features, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and smart city brake support.
Slotting in above that is the GT model, a $45,500 model that adds 20-inch wheels, a 12-speaker Bose stereo, navigation, and aluminum interior trim. Also making its appearance here is Mazda's first windshield-projected head-up driving display. An optional GT Technology package ($1,600) adds radar cruise control, smart brake support, forward obstruction warning, high beam control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
Topping the range is a new trim to Mazda, called Signature. For its $50,100 MSRP, it builds on the GT with Technology package and adds brown Nappa leather upholstery, open-pore rosewood wood interior trim, signature grille illumination, LED console and door-trim illumination, and LED interior lighting.
The new CX-9 will be offered in Snowflake White, Soul Red and Machine Grey paint, all of which carry a $300 cost; no-cost colours include Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Titanium Flash, and Sonic Silver.
Mazda says the new CX-9 is "among the most efficient vehicles of its size," with Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption ratings of 10.5/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway) with front-wheel drive, and 11.2/8.8 with all-wheel drive. The manufacturer claims that's a 35 percent improvement over the outgoing CX-9 (powered by a 3.7L V6), and says that comes not only thanks to the thriftier engine, but the new vehicle's 150 kg-lower curb weight.
