...And the Joker Got Away

In the Venn diagram of car fiends and movie maniacs, those of us who occupy the overlap have been puzzling over something since our first glimpse of Suicide Squad's car chase scene: just what the heck is the Joker driving?

Suicide Squad, the next movie in Warner Bros. latest iteration of the DC Comics universe, features an ensemble cast of comic-book baddies (including Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn) who are tasked with saving the world. It's unclear from the trailer just where principal Batman villain the Joker, played by Jared Leto, fits in the story, but what is certain is the Batmobile is about to get a nemesis of its very own.

Long before the official trailer dropped, leaked cell phone footage of the set gave us our first look at the Joker's new car–low, predatory, and very purple–careening around downtown Toronto with a caped crusader clinging to the roof. Sharp-eyed fans noted this was no Lamborghini, and speculated that it might be an Infiniti G35 (now the Q50) under a custom Vaydor body kit – speculation that proved correct.

Vaydor founder and CEO Matt MacEntagart was happy to provide the ride for one of the most iconic villains of all time. He started his Tampa-area company out of his garage in 2013, seeing a market in the desire for a head-turning toy that doesn't cost a half a million dollars. The result was the Vaydor kit, which brings all the bling of an ultra luxury sports car, but can be had for a fraction of the cost of, say, an Aventador.

On the movie set, the Joker's Vaydor is the antithesis of the steely tank the Batmobile has become under the de-saturated direction of Zack Snyder. In fact, Suicide Squad is already looking more lighthearted than Batman v Superman, in part because this over-the-top purple ego-rocket put some of the fun back into the franchise.

After all, what is the point of a crime spree if you can't flaunt a wicked set of wheels?

You can own your very own Jokerghini from Vaydor Bodykits – the fibreglass body kit by itself starts at $11,000. (No crime sprees, please.)

Suicide Squad opens August 5th, and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis.
