Genesis to Plug in to Luxury PHEV Trend

With two plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models under its belt already, Hyundai is getting set to bring the technology to its recently-spawned upscale Genesis line.

Range-extending plug-in hybrid tech would enable the Genesis brand vehicles to line up against the latest from more established luxury brands: BMW recently added a plug-in version of its X5 crossover (xDrive 40e) and Porsche offers plug-in variants of its Cayenne and Panamera models, and Audi, Cadillac, Infiniti and Volvo have all announced plans to plug in, too.

According to an Automotive News report, Hyundai is being coy about which Genesis model will be first to gain electrification, but we figure it's bound to be one of either the full-size G90 (nee Equus) or the G80 that began as the Hyundai Genesis sedan.

Hyundai's first plug-in model was a Sonata family sedan variant introduced in 2015, and its latest is the Ioniq, a new-from-the-wheels-up hybrid model that goes on sale this fall. The company has also hinted it will launch an all-electric crossover model in 2018.
