Trademark filings discovered this week make it look like Harley-Davidson is planning to bring back the classic Sport Glide name for a new motorcycle. The Harley-Davidson Sport Glide was originally built from 1983 until 1993. It was a variant of the Super Glide with the addition of a mid-size fairing and windshield plus saddlebags. The Super Glide was a big twin engine, but designed with an all-new lighter frame. The bike was intended to compete with the handling and sportiness of the newer Japanese bikes, but still provide the style, power, and image of a Harley. It was even supposed to be water cooled, until funding issues cut that engine program.
Recent US and EU patent and trademark office searches show that Harley-Davidson has filed for a trademark on the Sport Glide name for use on “motorcycles and structural parts therefor”, suggesting that they are intending to re-introduce the model. The new Sport Glide is likely to be part of the Dyna family. Similar to the Switchback but with a new fairing and windscreen.
There's no indication as to when the new bike might be revealed, and the size, engine and the rest are speculation, but we'll bring you all the new information as it arrives.
