Reports out of Coventry are suggesting that Jaguar is scrapping plans for a replacement for the XK coupe and convertible, has decided against building the C-X75 featured in Spectre, and is instead building an EV to replace the XJ sedan and another to go alongside the F-Pace.
Codenamed X590, the large EV is reported to be a four-door coupe with a hatch, intended to compete against the Tesla Model S. It will use an all-new architecture and should adaptable for autonomous driving as well. The all-wheel-drive EV will reach the market a year before similar EVs from Mercedes, Audi, and BMW. It is hoped that beating the Germans to the punch will help Jaguar's image and bolster performance in a market where they are often overlooked. The X590 won't replace the current XJ, at least not initially, but it's certainly a possibility before the next XJ is scheduled.
In 2019, an electric SUV will follow. Originally planned as a Range Rover, it fits better into the Jaguar lineup. The body is said to be a modern, sleek body, more like a lifted four-door coupe than a SUV. There will be rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models available, along with a choice of battery packs.
Between the two models, Jaguar is expecting up to 80,000 sales per year. A big boost for a company that has struggled with their volumes of late.
