Harley-Davidson has announced that their 2017 Touring motorcycles are getting a pair of all-new big twin engines. Harley calls the new Milwaukee-Eight engine–equipped cycles their most powerful Touring motorcycles ever.
The new engine is available as the Milwaukee-Eight 107 or 114 versions, the number representing their displacement in cubic inches (1.75 and 1.87 litres, respectively). The design retains Harley's 45-degree V-twin cylinder angle but is otherwise all-new. There are four-valve cylinder heads with higher flow and the engines produce 10 percent more torque than the outgoing twin cam models. The new twin is counter-balanced, which Harley claims to contribute to 75 percent less vibration than before. Improvements to the cooling system also help to improve the experience.
In addition to a smoother ride, General Manager of Harley-Davidson powertrain operations Randy Christianson outlines quicker throttle response, more passing power, and "purer sound". The new engine will start in the Touring lineup, which includes the Road King, Street Glide, Road Glide, Electra Glide, and Ultra motorcycles.
Harley-Davidson has also announced that the bikes will be available with a selection of street-legal Screamin' Eagle performance parts for up to a 24 percent torque increase from stock. The 2017 Touring bikes will also be augmented with a new front and rear suspension for improved ride comfort, lighter weight, and better handling.
The new engine is on sale soon, with an open house at Harley dealers scheduled for September 23rd to let riders put a leg over the new machines.
