Nissan Adds a Turbo to the Sentra

Nissan is injecting a little bit more sport and a whole bunch more oomph into the 2017 Sentra SR Turbo. The new model gets a 1.6L four-cylinder that is direct-injected and turbocharged to produce 188 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. That's a big boost from the 130 hp of the 1.8L four in other Sentra models.

The new engine can also be paired to a six-speed manual transmission, otherwise only available on the base S model. While the manual transmission is the likely choice for enthusiasts, there is an Xtronic CVT transmission available as well that offers a manual mode. The CVT is unique to the SR model, with different pulleys, wider gear ratios, and software to optimize the performance of the turbo.

The transmission and the engine aren't the only things changed for the SR Turbo, and Nissan has given the car a revised suspension with new dampers and suspension tuning. There are larger front brakes, and the power steering has been revised and retuned for more feel on windy roads, with less effort when parking. Nissan has also made enhancements to the structure to help cope with the extra power.

The SR Turbo will be available with a Premium package that offers blind spot and cross traffic warnings, leather seats, Nissan Connect navigation and apps, and a Bose eight-speaker stereo. SR models get LED headlights, LED accent lights, 17-inch alloys, and a unique body kit.

The 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo will arrive at dealers in the fall.
