BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars Reveal Airbag-Compatible Motorcycle Jacket

BMW Motorrad and safety partner Alpinestars have just released the BMW Motorrad Street Air Dry by Alpinestars. It's a motorcycle jacket that works with an airbag system to give riders significant upper body protection both on- and off-road.

The jacket works as part of a system that includes Alpinestars' airbag system vest and offers instant, inflatable protection to the rider's back, kidneys, chest and shoulders. The system works independently, meaning that it is not tied to the bike; the sensors are in the jacket and vest, so it can follow you from bike to bike. The jacket itself offers insulation, weather resistance, and some impact and abrasion protection.

The bag can inflate in 25 milliseconds in case of a crash impact, loss of control, or even if rear-ended at a stop. The system is intended to be seamless and does not require any extra time pairing to the bike. It can even work off-road with no need to stop when leaving the trail. When worn with the jacket, the system is fully weatherproof.

This new jacket is the first part of an ongoing safety collaboration for the bike maker and apparel company and is on sale starting October.
