BMW Shows Concept X2

BMW has presented their concept for a new compact SUV. The concept X2 shares a platform with the X1 and the newest Minis, and is intended to be a more sporty alternative to the X1. Much like the coupe-like X6 to the more upright X5.

The styling is aggressive, and is intended to combine "the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of an X model". There are bold headlights, massive side grilles, and very wide rear haunches under a sloping roofline. Large wheel arches and lower body cladding are intended to further the resemblance to BMW's other X models, and they certainly show off the 21-inch wheels.

Other interesting details include laser lighting for the front headlights and a pronounced X shape in the center of the lamps. The slightly ducktailed spoiler also hides a channel allowing air to flow down over the rear glass. Resculpted, more flowing versions of BMW's L-shape tail lights and prominent tailpipe finishers complete the look.

The compact crossover is a hot sport in the market, and the production X2 is anticipated to join it sometime in 2017. Powertrain information hasn't been revealed, but the all-wheel drive and 2.0L turbocharged four from the X1 are the likely choices.
