Chevrolet Cruze To Offer Rare Diesel, Hatchback, Manual Combo

Chevrolet is going all-out with diesels for 2018. Not content to put one in the all-new Equinox SUV, the brand has just announced that the Cruze will be getting one as well. Not only will it get a diesel, but there will be a manual transmission option and a new automatic.

The diesel was announced to be a 1.6L turbo four, likely the same one as the Equinox and expected to produce 136 hp and a massive 236 lb-ft of torque. Matched to the engine will be a six-speed manual or an all-new nine-speed automatic. The engine will be offered with both transmissions in both the sedan and hatchback body styles.

The Opel Astra hatchback is very closely related to the Cruze, and when equipped with the 1.6L diesel and six-speed manual it is rated for 3.9 L/100 km in the combined European cycle. That cycle is known to give better than real-world numbers, and higher than Canadian testing, but road tests have shown 5.0 L/100 km to be commonly achievable in that car. Whatever the final Canadian rating is, it will almost certainly be class leading.

The Cruze diesels are scheduled to arrive in early 2017.
