Red Bull's Global Rallycross series is full of jumps, bumps, and some of the closest quarters racing to hit dirt and pavement. Now, for 2018, Red bull has announced they are adding an electric vehicle series to the mix.
The current cars are a range of compacts like the Ford Fiesta, Honda Civic, Subaru WRX STi, and even a couple of Volkswagen Beetles. The cars produce 600 hp and are built to withstand 21 meter jumps. Drivers in the top series include US Top Gear host Tanner Foust, Bucky Lasek, and rally legend Rhys Millen.
The electric series will not replace the current formula but is intended to be run alongside as a stand alone series. This would link them with the main Supercar series, and the Global Rallycross Lites cars already racing. High-performance electric vehicles are finally starting to make their mark in the racing world, with the FIA's Formula E series entering their third season.
Red Bull did not disclose which manufacturers had committed to the 2018 series, or what appearance they would take, but all-wheel drive electric cars going over jumps and nudging fenders sounds like an exciting series. Tesla Model 3 vs. Chevrolet Bolt in the dirt, anyone?
