German luxury car manufacturers BMW and Mercedes-Benz have recalled a combined nearly 18,500 vehicles in Canada to address potential flaws related to fuel pumps.
BMW's is by far the larger of the two recalls, covering 18,284 5 and 6 Series cars sold between 2010 and 2012, and X5 and X6 crossovers from model years 2007 through 2011.
Transport Canada says wiring going to the in-tank fuel pump may not have been crimped properly, and those poor connections could increase electrical resistance. The resulting heat could be enough to melt a nearby plastic component and cause the pump to stop working, and that poor electrical connection may also increase the chance of fire. BMW is instructing its dealers to replace the fuel delivery modules in the affected vehicles.
And Mercedes-Benz says that in 115 examples of its all-new 2017 E-Class sedan, the rear seat frame may damage wiring to the fuel system control unit, which comprises the fuel pump, tank pressure sensor and a fuel gauge sending unit. Badly damaged wiring would cause the pump to stop and the engine to stall; Mercedes is asking its dealers to inspect and re-route the wiring in the affected cars, and replace the wiring harness if it's damaged.
