Dragon Suing Porsche after 918 Spider Gets Burned

Two years after his brand new Porsche 918 Spyder was engulfed in flames, star of CBC's Dragon's Den Michael Wekerle is now suing a number of companies for damages. A report from the Globe and Mail states that the civil suit has been filed in Ontario Superior Court claiming damages totaling $9.4 million.

According to the report, the TV personality and CEO of Difference Capital, filed suit in September, naming Porsche AG, Porsche Cars Canada, Porsche Cars North America, dealer Pfaff Motors, fuel services contractor Royal Petroleum Maintenance, and fuelling equipment manufacturers OPW Fueling Components and Dover Canada ULC. Documents obtained by the Globe and Mail related to the suit claim Wekerle suffered “permanent scarring and disfigurement to his face,” “emotional and behavioural changes,” and a “loss of earning capacity" in the incident.

The incident occurred September 28, 2014 at an Esso in Caledon, Ontario. At the time, Wekerle was pumping gas into the Porsche 918 he had purchased less than a month prior. The rare, million dollar Porsche hybrid supercar erupted in flames and burned completely. Fortunately, the fire did not spread beyond the car and the nearest pump, and there were no further injuries. The car was one of only a handful in the country at the time. The cause of the fire was not released.
