McLaren Building Three-Seat F1 Successor

McLaren has confirmed that they are building a three-seat spiritual successor to the F1. The new car is code named the BP23, and if this is the first you've heard of it, you're already too late to buy one.

McLaren is calling the new car a "Hyper-GT", signifying that it will have hypercar performance, but that it is also designed with increased comfort in mind for long distance touring. The company is building 106 of the carbon fibre models, one for each McLaren F1 produced. All 106 are sold out already.

Powertrain details weren't given, but McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt said that it will be a hybrid, stating that "a hybrid powertrain will make it one of the most powerful McLarens yet created." The McLaren P1 hybrid produced 904 hp, so the BP23 may well have close to 1,000 hp. Despite that massive power output, McLaren expects that three people will be able to journey in comfort.

The car will have the butterfly doors that are now a McLaren hallmark, but on the new car, they will be power opening for the first time. They will also extend further into the roof, probably to help ease access to the three seats. Those seats will continue the unusual layout from the F1 of a centre-seated driver, with the passengers seated behind the driver. The layout was originally set up to improve visibility on-track.

McLaren hopes to start delivering the first examples of their "Hyper-GT" in early 2019. The buyers will be able to pick colours, trims, and probably nearly any other detail they care to.
