All-New Elantra GT: More Space Under the Hatch

The all-new Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback has been teased ahead of it arriving at the Chicago and Toronto auto shows next week. The new hatch is longer, wider, and better looking, plus it gets more power and a bit less weight.

The Elantra GT will be available in base GT, and in GT Sport trim. The base car has the 2.0L four-cylinder from the Elantra sedan, but here it will make 162 hp, about 15 more than the sedan. Like the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport sedan, the GT Sport gets the 1.6L turbo four from the Elantra Sport and makes 201 hp with 195 lb-ft. Both are available with a six-speed manual, with the GT getting a six-speed automatic and the Sport getting Hyundai's seven-speed dual clutch as the two-pedal option. The Sport also trades the rear torsion-beam suspension for an independent rear setup, gets bigger disc brakes, and adds 18-inch alloys to improve handling.

Inside, the car has grown slightly wider and longer. That extra size helps to add just over 50L of space behind the rear seats, boosting cargo space to 708 L. Hyundai says that it will have class leading interior space. Hyundai says that despite the extra size, the body is 27 kg lighter thanks to more use of high-strength steel.

The all-new interior will have available leather seats and dual-zone climate control, but that it will also be loaded with tech features. An 8.0-inch display audio system is standard with an Infinity premium audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available. The GT will be Amazon Alexa capable which adds features like the ability to tell Alexa to start your car. Radar cruise, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, and cross-traffic alerts will all be available.
