2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is Non-Hybrid Highway Fuel Economy Champ

Fuel economy figures for the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze diesel are in and the numbers are good. The 2017 Cruze diesel with a manual transmission gets the best highway consumption rating of any car that isn't a hybrid. The Natural Resources Canada estimate of 4.5 L/100 km even beats out all but one hybrid, the Hyundai Ioniq. The soon to be released Ioniq Hybrid Blue is rated for 4.0 L/100 km on the highway, and 4.1 L/100 km overall.

Equipped with a nine-speed automatic instead of the manual, the Cruze diesel manages a still-impressive 5.0 L/100 km on the highway. City numbers are 7.7 for the manual and 7.6 for the automatic, versus the 4.2 of the Ioniq. The fuel economy for the Cruze diesel should still come with good performance thanks to 140 hp and 240 lb-ft from the 1.6L turbocharged engine. For comparison, the gas-powered Cruze hits 8.3/6.0 with a manual and 7.9/5.9 with the older six-speed automatic.

The Cruze diesel should arrive soon in sedan form, with the hatchback waiting until later in the year--possibly as a 2018 model. Pricing for the Cruze diesel is available as well. It will come in LT trim only (for now, at least), with the manual starting at $24,195 and the automatic transmission equipped car starting at $25,645. That's a premium of $4,250 over the gas-engined cars.
