General Motors is bringing back the Redline trim designation, last used on a number of Saturn models, for a series of special edition Chevrolet trims.
Announced at the Chicago auto show, Redline is an appearance-only package for nine different models that brings a blacked-out grille, bowtie emblems and black wheels with red accents to the Silverado and Colorado LT pickups, Camaro RS and SS, Cruze and Malibu LT, Trax and Equinox LT and Traverse Premier.
This latest set of Redline specials differs from the old Saturn trims in two ways: First, Saturn spelled it Red Line; and second, those cars actually lived up to the promising moniker. The Ion Red Line was a rebodied version of the Cobalt SS that shared the same turbocharged engine, the Vue Red Line compact crossover got a stiffened, lowered suspension, and the sportiest turbocharged Sky Red Line two-seater was a mechanical twin of the tight but super-fun Pontiac Solstice GXP.
We won't deny we like the look of these new Chevrolet Redline models, but we're disappointed there are no mechanical upgrades to back them up.
Chevrolet is rolling out most of the Redline models between now and December 2017. No confirmation yet from GM Canada on the price of these models in Canada, but the company has confirmed that all nine Redline models will be available on both sides of the border.
