Mitsubishi Uncovers Eclipse Cross(over)

Mitsubishi is debuting the Eclipse Cross compact SUV at the Geneva Motor Show next week, but they've revealed photos and specs for the new SUV a week early. The new crossover gets some dramatic exterior styling and a 1.5L turbo four.

The highly styled and raked body is supposed to draw a line to the old Eclipse coupes. Mitsubishi is calling their new design an "SUV coupe." The nose wears the familiar Mitsubishi corporate face, but the corners have been pulled back. It's like a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander that's had an aggressively pulled back facelift. The tailgate is sharply raked, with a body cutline intended to increase the coupe look. Inside is a much more conventional design. It looks clean and simple, but a little bland when compared to the exterior. The footprint is close to the current 2017 Mitsubishi RVR, with the same wheelbase and slightly more overall length and width. The similar size means that the Eclipse Cross will most likely replace the RVR, rather than join it.

That interior will have an infotainment system that supports Apple Carplay and Android Auto. It's controlled by a touchpad on the center console that looks very much like the controller Lexus uses. The SUV gets a full-colour head-up display like the one in the 2017 Mazda CX-9.

The Eclipse Cross will come with a 1.5L turbocharged four cylinder mated to a CVT. They haven't said how much power that engine will make, but they did say that the CVT will have eight virtual gear ratios for you to choose from in sport mode. Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel drive system will be standard. Other markets get a 2.2L turbodiesel with an eight-speed automatic. It's not clear if that model will see Canadian roads, but it seems unlikely.

After its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the Eclipse Cross will hit showrooms in Europe later this year. The Canadian launch will follow.
