After nine long years, Volvo has just launched an all-new XC60 SUV. The premium crossover accounts for nearly one-third of all Volvo sales worldwide, so they aren't taking the design of a new model lightly.
In fact, they're bringing some big claims to the table, calling it "one of the safest cars ever made." Some of the features they've added to help make it that include their new Steering Assist included in the Oncoming Lane Mitigation and City Safety features. The XC60 will now use steering as well as braking to try and help you avoid accidents. It now has Volvo's semi-autonomous Pilot Assist available as well that can drive for you on "well-marked roads up to 130 km/h."
The Canadian XC60 will get two engines. The T6 Drive-E and the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid system. The T6 is Volvo's familiar turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L four cylinder that makes 320 hp and 332 lb-ft. The T8 twin engine has the same engine, but with two electric motors added. One for the front axle, and one for the rear. The combination makes 408 hp and 472 lb-ft. of torque in the 2017 XC90 hybrid, plus its T8 plug-in version can drive up to 21 km on electric only, so expect similar numbers here with the XC60 T8.
Inside, there are new infotainment systems, offering updated versions of Volvo's Sensus and On Call apps. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available as well. The XC60 gets a new CleanZone four-zone climate control system that has filters to "deliver Scandinavian-fresh air on the inside."
The styling in and out takes some big pages from Volvo's 2017 V90 and XC90, but that's no bad thing. Volvo's Hammer of Thor headlights, sculpted shoulders, and tall taillights are simple but handsome. The inside has Volvo's current elegant design as well.
The new Volvo XC60 should arrive in Canadian showrooms in the fourth quarter of this year.
