Since basically forever, pickup truck manufacturers have found countless ways to demonstrate the crazy-heavy things their trucks are capable of towing, like a 1972 Chevy pulling a Boeing 747.
But Toyota and Japanese radio-controlled toy manufacturer Tamiya have teamed up to put a new spin on the look-at-what-we-can-haul brag. In this case, it's Tamiya doing the boasting, hitching up 15 examples of its latest 1/10 scale Hilux Bruiser model to tow a 2017 Toyota Hilux D4D Invincible pickup.
Had you asked us to bet on whether this stunt would work, we'd have laughed in your face. But apparently, with each 3.2-kg model truck generating about 17 lb-ft of torque -- a total of 255 lb-ft being put to the ground by 30 tiny tires -- is indeed enough to haul a 2,000-kg Double Cab Hilux across a warehouse floor.
Believe it or not, this is not the first time a fleet of Tamiya Hilux models has pulled a real-life version of the venerable Toyota truck: The new video is a recreation of a scene from a 1980s Tamiya promo for a then-new 1/10 Hilux R/C model.
The new video is one of a series of videos called Hilux: Little and Large that shows the latest versions of the grown-up Hilux and the Tamiya model doing truck things, like fording a stream and hauling arse through a muddy field.
These short films are an unabashed marketing ploy, but it's a cute and clever one.
