Courts in Ontario and Quebec have granted approval to the settlement between Volkswagen Canada and owners of 2.0L TDI models affected by the VW diesel emission scandal. The settlement sees cash payments to owners, along with vehicle buybacks. Owners can start submitting claims on April 28th at a website Volkswagen has set up for that purpose.
The payout for owners of the 2.0L TDI Volkswagens and Audis will see owners getting between $5,100 and $8,000. 2009 model Volkswagens receive the lowest payout and owners of 2015 Audis get the most.
Cars affected by today's announcement:
Volkswagen Jetta TDI 2009-2015
Volkswagen Jetta Wagon TDI 2009
Volkswagen Golf TDI 2010-2013, 2015
Volkswagen Passat TDI 2012-2015
Volkswagen Beetle TDI 2013-2015
Volkswagen Golf Wagon TDI 2010-2014
Volkswagen Golf Sportwagon TDI 2015
Audi A3 2010-2013, 2015
In addition to the cash payment, owners can choose to sell or trade in their cars based on the wholesale value of the car as of September 18, 2015, the day the scandal broke. If the fair market value of their car is determined to be higher than the 2015 wholesale value, owners are entitled to receive that amount as well. Since an emissions fix for some 2015 models has been approved by regulators, owners can opt to keep their TDI and take the cash payout. Owners who choose to keep their cars will get their cars fixed and receive an extended emissions warranty. 2015 model year cars that have received the fix can also be resold by Volkswagen.
Owners who leased their vehicle during that time, but have since returned it can also get a cash payout.
The settlements for owners of other affected VW diesels, including the 3.0L TDI models, are still progressing through the court system.
