Nissan has just announced that they will be adding automatic emergency braking as standard on eight of their most popular models. That puts the advanced safety system on nearly 90,000 Nissan vehicles next year.
The automatic braking system will be standard on the 2018 Nissan Rogue, Murano, Pathfinder, and Armada SUVs. The larger vehicles aren't the only ones though, as the Sentra, Altima, Maxima, and the electric Leaf get it too. All trims of those models will get the braking system, except for manual transmission or NISMO versions. The new Qashqai SUV will get the feature, but only on select trims.
The system, which Nissan used to call forward emergency baking, uses radar to monitor the vehicle in front. The system starts with a warning, letting the driver know via audio and visual warnings that a collision is imminent. If the driver doesn't respond, the system hits the brakes. That lets the system help "avoid the collision or reduce the speed of impact."
Nissan said that a US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that a third of all police-reported accidents involved a rear-end collision. The NHTSA also reported that emergency braking systems could reduce injury claims in these accidents by as much as 35 percent.
