It's a flagship electric concept that gives BMW a big boost for the i brand. But it's also a glorious shot across the bow of Tesla's Model S.
The BMW i Vision Dynamics is a four-door coupe. In BMW-speak, a Gran Coupe. It has a 600 km range, a 200 km/h top speed, and it can hit 100 km/h from a stop in just four seconds.
The styling shows BMW's future direction. Much like the X7 concept, it has a much larger and conjoined kidney grille than previous models. Although here, those grilles aren't. Since there is no need for cooling airflow, the kidneys are embossed shapes rather than slatted openings. The nose shares the upright and chunky bumper corners with the X7 concept that carry over at the base of the rear bumper.
The greenhouse reflects the grille shape, with the side glass narrowing at the door pillar to give the side profile the same look as the new nose. BMW's signature Hofmeister kink at the base of the C-pillar is almost unnoticeable, although it is still there in the coupe-like roofline. The flush window glass is intended to maximise aerodynamic efficiency.
The roof itself is one massive glass panel. It's intended to improve spaciousness and comfort in the vehicle. Something BMW feels "will gain further in importance in the future, in particular as far as (semi-) autonomous and connected driving is concerned."
The stats and styling are show-car impressive, but something like this could make production. BMW says that this is how they "envisage future electric mobility between the i3 and i8," adding that "BMW has demonstrated its talent for turning visions into real life throughout its history." It's part of the company's plan to offer 25 electrified models - 12 pure EV, the rest plug-in hybrids or conventional ones - by 2025.
