FRANKFURT – Volkswagen unveiled its new I.D. Crozz II concept at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, an all-electric concept that will come to Canada in its production form. The Crozz II was unveiled alongside two previously shown models based on shared electric architecture, the I.D. and the I.D. Buzz van.
Based on the European Polo model, the I.D. will not be sold in Canada, but the I.D. Buzz electric van will. The company said the three models will be in production by 2020, and by 2025, the automaker will have 23 electric models in global markets.
Volkswagen calls the four-door I.D. Crozz II an “SUV and coupe crossover”. It uses two electric motors with an output of 225 kW, one on each axle, to create its all-wheel drive. Top speed is 180 km/h, and the car will have a potential range of up to 500 kilometres on a charge. The concept does not have B-pillars, allowing the front swinging doors and rear sliding doors to fully open for cargo, and the I.D. Crozz II can carry a bicycle inside.
The I.D. Buzz was first shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2017. Based on the iconic 1960s van, the Buzz also uses two motors for all-wheel drive, and Volkswagen says it has a range of up to 600 kilometres. The company also plans to introduce its self-driving technologies on it, and says the I.D. Buzz will become the first autonomous zero-emission van in 2022.
