Koenigsegg Agera RS now World's Fastest Production Car

There's a new fastest production car in the world. Again. And this time it's a Koenigsegg. Again.

Snatching the record away from Bugatti's Chiron, the Agera RS has managed a two-way average speed of 447 km/h. Koenigsegg calls it a world record for a production car.

The runs happened this weekend on a long stretch of road near Pahrump, Nevada, about an hour west of Las Vegas. The road was closed while Koenigsegg made the record attempts, with factory driver Niklas Lilja behind the wheel.

Lilja is the same factory driver that took the Agera RS from 0-400-0 km/h in under 42 seconds, smashing another record last month. Based on that unique colour scheme, it's the same car, too.

That Agera RS has the 1,360 hp twin-turbo 5.0L V8 and a removable roll cage. The maximum speed reached was 457 km/h on the second pass. But a windy day meant that the first pass was slower and the average speed was 447 km/h. That's faster than the 434 that the Bugatti Veyron (the number two on the list) has managed. The Chiron is limited to 420 km/h.

Last week, Hennessey Special Vehicles said that their Venom F5 was capable of 488 km/h. We look forward to seeing the attempt. A battle of top speed top trumps is always fun.

In the meantime, here's what 457 km/h looks like, from the inside.
