Nissan Micra Cup Racing Series Confirmed Through 2020

Canada’s most affordable racing series will race on until at least 2020.

Nissan Canada has confirmed that its homegrown Micra Cup series, which allows competitors to buy a fully race-ready car for $20,000, has been renewed for another three seasons. The announcement was made at the annual awards gala on Saturday evening in Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, by President Joni Paiva and series promoter Jacques Deshaies.

Launched in 2015, the Nissan Micra Cup is contested using identical base Nissan Micra racecars that are largely stock – including the factory-installed engine and manual transmission – apart from a stripped-down interior, a roll cage, a race-spec seat, and NISMO performance suspension parts. Its calendar was initially centred exclusively in Quebec and expanded into Ontario ahead of the 2016 season.

On average, 25 cars have competed for the title in each of the past three years with drivers from 18 to 64 years-old including four women, five international drivers, and representatives from 12 Nissan dealerships.

“We are very excited to announce the extension of the Nissan Micra Cup in Canada,” said Michael Carcamo, global motorsports director for Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “Along with competitive drivers and exciting race venues, the Nissan Micra has proven its durability and reliability in the most intense environment, motorsport racing. We look forward to more great racing in the years to come and we congratulate all the participants of the first three seasons.”

“The Nissan Micra Cup is more than just a motorsport series,” Paiva added. “(It) is also another way for us to connect on a deeper level with the general public, the fans, Nissan owners and Nissan dealers, and we’re thrilled to bring the family spirit of the Nissan Micra Cup back to Canadian tracks for three more years.”

“In three years, the Nissan Micra Cup has become a leading racing series in the national motorsports community, while also remaining the most accessible and affordable,” Deshaies said. “We are very proud of this 100 percent Canadian achievement and look forward seeing it grow and evolve even more over the next three years.”

The 2018 Nissan Micra Cup calendar will be announced later in the off-season.
