Infiniti To Launch Variable Compression Engine in 2019 QX50

Infiniti will be rolling out a new engine technology when the next-generation of the QX50 arrives as a 2019 model.

The crossover, which will go on sale sometime next year, will be using a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that has a new trick up its sleeve: variable compression.

When the engine was displayed at the Paris Motor Show, Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti Motor Company, said the engine would be available on Infiniti models from 2018 onward.

The engine technology is made possible by an actuator arm that can change the distance travelled by the pistons by as much as six millimetres.

Infiniti explains it this way: "When a change in compression ratio is needed, the Harmonic Drive turns and moves the actuator arm. The actuator arm rotates the control shaft. As the control shaft rotates, it acts upon the lower-link, which changes the angle of the multi-link. The multi-link adjusts the height the piston can reach within the cylinder, this changing the compression ratio."

By varying the compression ratio, the engine becomes more powerful and efficient.

According to Infiniti, the engine is able to offer any compression ratio between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency).

According to several reports, the engine will produce 268 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque.
