Next Porsche 911 Could Come With High-Performance Hybrid Option

The iconic Porsche 911, a new version of which is coming next year, could reportedly be offered with a high-performance hybrid version. It is still a few years away, but the 911’s new design is being developed with an electric powertrain in mind, according to a Bloomberg report.

The information was confirmed to the news agency by a Porsche spokesperson, who added that the company is keeping its options open.

Engineers are working on ways to reduce the weight of the battery for the 911, and the model would offer an electric driving range of about 70 kilometres, said the report, quoting unnamed 'people familiar with the matter.' The challenge is to make sure the EV powertrain doesn’t negatively affect handling, Bloomberg was told.

A hybrid version of the 911 is part of a much larger electric vehicle push by Porsche’s parent company, Volkswagen AG, which is investing heavily in developing electric variants of all its models.

While the 911 hybrid is still on the drawing board, Porsche is set to unveil its first all-electric sports car, the Mission E, in 2019.
