Volkswagen I.D. Crozz A Preview of Electric SUV

An electric SUV is coming by 2020, Volkswagen said Tuesday, and it will be based on the I.D. Crozz concept, which made its North American debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

It is joined by the I.D. Buzz and Volkswagen’s original I.D. concept.

Volkswagen says that the modular electric platform used for its three I.D. concept vehicles will serve as a base for all future Volkswagen EVs. The company has a goal of bringing to the global market a total of 15 different EVs by 2025.

The vehicle that will be built from the I.D. Crozz concept will be similar in size to the 2018 Tiguan, but it will look more like a four-door coupe, Volkswagen said.

The I.D. Crozz concept uses an 83-kWh battery pack and two electric motors generating a total of 302 hp. The EVs range is estimated at 482 kilometres (300 miles).

It features 4Motion, with the rear electric motor as the main source of propulsion. The front motor will engage when extra traction is needed.

Volkswagen says the EV will be able to charge quicker that current models, with an 80 percent in 30 minutes using a 150 kWh DC charger.

The concept also features I.D. Pilot, a self-driving technology that Volkswagen wants to have in use by 2025.
