These Are the First Mercedes-AMG Hybrids

Mercedes-AMG has released their latest hot Benzes. The AMG 53 line will see a CLS, E-Class Coupe, and Cabrio that'll be quicker, faster, and are the first hybrid models to wear the AMG badge.

The AMG 53 models start with a 3.0L inline-six that gets two turbos and develops 429 hp with 384 lb-ft of torque. The EQ Boost hybrid system adds 21 hp and 184 lb-ft to that output while also providing micro hybrid fuel economy benefits. They will be paired with an AMG Speedshift nine-speed transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic + all-wheel drive.

The EQ Boost combination starter-alternator sits between the engine and transmission. The 48-volt system provides regenerative braking, allows for smoother start-stop operation as well as more time spent in the Sail mode at speed. The system uses the extra torque to reduce turbo lag from the gas engine when pulling away from a stop.

The 53-series cars get a twin-blade front grille with twin round tailpipes in the rear to set them apart visually. That grille has a black lattice pattern instead of the diamond pin grille of lesser cars. There are also wide AMG side skirts and a new front fascia. Those side sills combine with the mud flaps to improve rear aerodynamics.

Inside, the AMG models have AMG gauges, with a 12.3-inch fully-digital display available. They have special AMG upholstery with unique trim in metal weave or fibreglass. Red seatbelts are available. The 53 series cars also get a standard AMG Performance steering wheel, covered in Nappa leather or Dinamica microfibre.

The suspension uses AMG's Ride Control + air system to provide more sporty ride and handling and is continuously adjustable to improve comfort and compliance. It has the ability to vary the spring rate to reduce roll when cornering. The front suspension and steering systems have been adjusted to be more rigid for better handling.

For longer trips, the 53s will offer an optional Energizing comfort control. That links the climate control, the heat, ventilation, and massage seats, surface heating, ambient lighting, and music to set different moods and help energize the driver and enhance alertness.

The CLS 53 adds some driver assistance features fromĀ its S-Class big brother, like active braking, lane keeping, and attention assist. New for this model is Pre-Safe Sound which helps to prepare your ear and protect it from the loud volume of a crash.

The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53, E 53 Coupe, and E 53 Cabrio are expected to go on sale later this year.
