Volvo has pulled the wraps off its future product plans with the announcement it will roll out a pair of compact electric vehicles in 2020 and 2022 to follow the Polestar 1 coupe that will be shown next month at the Geneva auto show.
According to a report by the UK's Auto Express, the first of those EVs is being dubbed Polestar 2 and will come in 2020 in the form of a compact sedan conceived to compete with the Tesla Model 3. The second, Polestar 3, will be a "low and aerodynamic" crossover SUV.
Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath told Auto Express that the Polestar 2 will be launched in 2019 with production planned for early 2020. Volvo says its starting price will be "around 40,000 Euros," which is about CAD$62,000 by current exchange rates.
Meanwhile, Polestar 1 — a hybrid coupe — will make a circuit of the world's other major auto shows before the car's mid-2019 launch. Volvo isn't kidding around with this one: its plug-in hybrid powertrain will generate 600 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque, and the car will be priced well into six figures.
Polestar also says it will offer its customers the option to pay for a monthly subscription service that will cover the use of the car, including insurance, for a specified period. Shoppers will also be able to purchase the car outright.
Volvo says that while Polestar 1 and 3 will be built in China, it hasn't decided where it will produce Polestar 2.
We contacted Volvo Canada to ask when Polestar's vehicles will arrive here, but have yet to get a response from the automaker.
