Subaru's First Eight-Seat Crossover Starts From $35,995

Subaru has released pricing for the 2019 Ascent SUV. It's Subaru's largest vehicle to date, offers seating for eight, and it starts with a broad range of active safety features for under $36k.

It's not Subaru's first three-row crossover. That honour fell to the Tribeca, an oddly styled crossover that failed to catch on. The Ascent is bigger, with seating for up to eight passengers, or seven with optional captain's chairs in the middle row.

The new crossover is powered by a 2.4L turbocharged boxer four that makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. It's connected to Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive through a Lineartronic CVT. The transmission uses a chain and a torque converter to improve response and performance. It can also tow up to 2,270 kg. It has active torque vectoring from the WRX as standard to shift power to improve handling.

The Ascent starts with the Convenience trim. It has Subaru's EyeSight active safety suite that includes pre-collision braking, radar cruise control, lane keep assist, and lead vehicle start assist. It has a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. It also comes with heated front seats - power adjustable for the driver - second-row USB ports, three-zone climate control, and a whopping 19 cup and bottle holders.

The Touring trim adds a larger 8.0-inch screen, as well as blind spot detection, lane-change assist, and rear cross traffic alerts. Additional convenience features include a power tailgate, panoramic sunroof, push-button start, and second-row climate controls.

The Limited adds LED headlights, 20-inch alloys, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated second-row seats, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with navigation, and USB ports for the third row. It has a 6.3-inch info display screen and a heated steering wheel. The top Premier trim adds ventilated front seats, brown leather, a front-view camera, rain sensing wipers, a special grille, and a 120-volt power outlet. That model is only available with the seven-seat option.
