The Volvo XC40 Has a Starring Role in the New Tomb Raider Flick

When the Tomb Raider reboot hits the big screen on Friday, it will put an up-and-coming Swedish action movie star in one of that country's newest cars, the 2019 Volvo XC40.

In the latest take on the action film franchise popularized by Angelina Jolie, Sweden's Alicia Vikander assumes the role of Lara Croft, who gets around in Volvo's new compact crossover when she's not fending off baddies.

This is certainly not Vikander's first time on the big screen, but Tomb Raider puts her in the leading role of a big-budget action film for the first time. And while the XC40 isn't the kind of high-performance car we're used to seeing title characters drive in blow-em-up movies, we're not surprised that Volvo – a brand enjoying its own moment in the spotlight – chose a tie-in with a film starring a fellow Swede.

With the product placement aimed at focusing American moviegoers' attention on the XC40, Volvo USA has added a Lara Croft spec to its online vehicle configurator, but it's not hard to recreate the car seen in the movie for yourself: it's an XC40 T5 with 20-inch wheels and black nubuck leather interior, a combination that carries a $47,590 MSRP.

The XC40 will reach dealerships this spring; Tomb Raider opens in theatres across Canada this Friday, March 16.
