Volkswagen To Bring New Compact Crossover To Canada

Volkswagen will continue its SUV offensive in Canada as soon as 2020 with a compact crossover model that will be built in Mexico.

The new model was made official in VW's annual press conference, held recently in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The last time we reported on a small Volkswagen utility to slot in under the new Tiguan, the vehicle in consideration was the T-Roc. Now we learn that car was never intended for North America, according to Volkswagen Canada's Thomas Tetzlaff, who spoke to Automotive News Canada.

Instead, the T-Roc will be specific to the European market, and Canada and the United States will get a new design (to which VW gave a green light in early March) that the company is referring to internally as the Volks-SUV. That unit was teased in a sketch revealed at the press conference. That vehicle will be produced first in China before VW expands production to Mexico in 2020; it's those Mexican-built models that will exported to Canada and the United States.

According to VW CEO Herbert Diess, the manufacturer wants to double the number of SUVs and crossovers on offer in almost every global market by 2020.
