As Tesla works on ramping up Model 3 deliveries, including the first orders for the car in Canada, progress toward the company's next vehicle moves forward. A new report suggests that the Model Y SUV is aiming for production to start in November of next year.
Sources with knowledge of the company's supply chain told Reuters that the electric automaker is accepting preliminary bids for components on the Model Y. They said that details about the program were sparse and that originally a time frame was not given. Now, the sources say that the new crossover would start production in November of 2019.
The Model 3 launch is still taking more time and work than expected. CEO Elon Musk said recently that he is sleeping at the factory in an effort to help solve issues. But the company needs to keep moving forward to develop future product.
The Model Y is expected to be a compact crossover that has an electric range close to that of the Model 3. Musk has reversed course on what platform would underpin the new vehicle, but the latest from the CEO has it on the same platform as the Model 3 but with a much-revised wiring system that would remove the 12-volt architecture to simplify vehicle wiring.
Musk said in February that the company was aiming for production of one million units per year of the Y, double that of the Model 3. He also said then that capital investments for the crossover would start by the end of this year.
