The replacements for the Lamborghini Aventador and Huracan are coming in 2020 and 2022, and this time they'll be plug-in hybrids.
This has been confirmed by none other than CEO Stefano Domenicali. But that doesn't mean bad news. Chief Technical Officer Maurizio Reggiani told Top Gear Magazine that plug-in Lamborghinis will still be the raging bulls buyers expect.
"As long as I’m technical director, our super sports cars will not have a turbocharged engine. It’s about emotion. If you don’t have emotion, then you have nothing," Reggiani said.
He clarified, stating that the naturally aspirated screaming V10 and V12 engines will live on for at least one more generation, but they will get electrical assistance to help meet emissions targets. That means hybrid assistance and a small EV range.
A quiet Lambo might not sound quite right, but it won't stay quiet. "Yes, this will be a silent Lamborghini, but push the accelerator and the engine will come. Silence will only last for some seconds – then comes the sound," Reggiani said.
A full EV from the hypercar maker is still in the cards, says Domenicali, "I don’t think that the technology for a full electric Lamborghini will be ready until 2026." That car was previewed as the Terzo Millennio concept late last year, and it'll be ready when it's ready. Domenicali also said that company engineers are looking at hydrogen power for the generation following the EV.
