Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Gains Power, Range, Massage Seats

Porsche is plugging in the latest Cayenne. The new E-Hybrid model replaces the Cayenne S E-Hybrid of the last-generation version, but despite the missing S it offers more power, more range, and bigger wheels.

The third-generation of Porsche's bigger crossover was revealed late last year, with three gas-engine options. Now, the plug-in hybrid model has arrived. The Cayenne E-Hybrid takes the 3.0L turbocharged V6 from the base Cayenne and electrifies it. The 340 hp V6 is boosted by a 136 hp electric motor to make a combined 462 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. That's up 39 hp from the outgoing Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

Electricity for that motor is in a 14.1 kWh liquid cooled lithium-ion battery. That's a big boost from the 10.8 kWh of the old model, and is enough to give the vehicle an estimated 44 km electric range on the European test cycle. This should help it exceed the current Cayenne S E-Hybrid's rather meagre official 23 km range, using NR Canada's more realistic ratings.

The Cayenne hybrid has Porsche Traction Management and Porsche Active Suspension Management as standard. The former uses a clutch-controlled differential and automatic brake differential to shift power between the wheels that need it for improved grip and stability. The latter adjusts damping for improved handling and ride. It will need that adjustable damping to help control the new wheels: 22-inch alloys are available on the Cayenne hybrid, the first time Porsche has offered wheels that large. They will hurt electric range though.

Along with the 22-inch wheels, some other features are joining the Cayenne line through the E-Hybrid. like massage seats, a heated windshield, and a head-up display. The full-colour display is a Porsche first as well. It also adds Porsche's new InnoDrive which is a new spin on adaptive cruise control. It can use navigation data and traffic sensing to see up to three kilometres ahead and adjust speeds, coast, and even change gears in the Tiptronic transmission well in advance.

The 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid is expected to arrive early next year.
