Audi Backs Out Of Detroit Auto Show

Audi has announced it will not participate in next year's Detroit auto show, a decision that means none of the German luxury "big three" will be there in 2019.

According to Automotive News, the Ingolstadt-based company's pull-out follows similar recent revelations from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and adds another automaker to a list of no-shows that already included Mazda, Mini, Volvo, Porsche, Jaguar and Land Rover.

Volkswagen, which owns the Audi brand, will still show its wares in Detroit next year.

Auto News quotes a spokesperson for the Detroit Auto Dealers Association who said there are plans to "revolutionize" the Detroit show to turn it into "a global stage that delivers cost-effective opportunities to audiences."

A couple of months ago, we reported that the North American International Auto Show, or NAIAS, as the event is also known, was considering shifting its dates from January to October.

But according to an article published in the Detroit News earlier this week, General Motors has floated the idea of turning the show into a city-wide event held in June to leverage Detroit's reputation as the Motor City.

Either move would put some distance between NAIAS and Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which also happens in early January and in recent years has been stealing Detroit's thunder thanks to the auto industry's increasing focus on connectivity.
