Rolls Royce is celebrating the Silver Ghost by adding some more silver to the Ghost with a special edition limited to just 35 vehicles.
The original Silver Ghost was a 1907 40/50hp Rolls that set a then-record for longest non-stop drive. It was able to go nearly 24,000 km without a significant fault. Not exactly impressive today, but astounding at the time. It included 27 round trip drives between London and Glasgow. The car was the start of Rolls-Royce's claim to being the best car in the world, a tag given to them by the media after the test.
Today's Silver Ghost Collection is a run of 35 cars that pay tribute to the original. The visual cues special to the modern car start at the nose. The grille bars are black instead of chrome, like the original.
The Spirit of Ecstasy that graces the hood of the car is made from solid sterling silver with a black-gold plated collar at the base. At the feet of the lady is a hammered copper hallmark with AX201 stamped into it. That's in recognition to the copper that the original car used extensively inside the engine bay.
Circling the car's silver paint is a hand-painted coachline, with paint that contains particles of silver. The wheel surround, what we'd probably call a hubcab, is chrome and engraved for the Silver Ghost to show the Rolls-Royce name as well as the year of the first Silver Ghost.
Inside, the car has open pore Tudor oak trim with silver onlays. It also has features like a bespoke accoutrement area for holding items like pens and sunglasses. The concept version Rolls-Royce showed earlier this year also sported forest green interior leather, though the company didn't show that in today's reveal.
"Careful consideration has been paid to the Collection’s defining features. References extoling the past are skilfully hand-crafted into Ghost’s interior and exterior, creating a contemporary homage which speaks as much of today’s great brand as the original Silver Ghost does of its day," said Ghost Product Manager Matthew Butt.
Powertrain details weren't mentioned, so expect it to share those bits with the regular ghost. That car uses a 6.6L V12 that makes 563 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque. Or in Rolls-Royce's words, power is sufficient.
