Mercedes-Benz Looses Silver Arrow Electric Concept

The Vision EQ Silver Arrow is a stunning look back at Mercedes-Benz history, combined with the potential that the future of horsepower has to offer.

With the Vision EQ Silver Arrow, revealed this weekend during Monterey Car Week, Mercedes is calling specifically to the W 125 of 1937.

The original Silver Arrows were streamlined Grand Prix and speed record cars from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Named for their pointy, narrow shape and bare aluminum bodywork, the cars were monsters for the track that had enough power and aerodynamic sleekness to allow for top speeds far higher than the suspensions could handle.

Instead of bare aluminum, this car is carbon fibre. The paintwork is multiple layers of alumbeam silver that gives a liquid metal appearance. The sleek lines call back to the vintage streamliners, but the thin light strip on the nose comes from Benz's latest EQ concepts. The wheels have 168 spokes, made from aluminum and painted in the EQ signature rose gold.

The electric driveline uses an 80 kWh battery that lives under the floor. Mercedes says that the electric motors deliver 750 hp, and that the car is capable of a 400 km range on the WLTP cycle. The side vents are designed to cool the battery. To take the place of the W 125's 5.6L supercharged straight eight, the EQ Silver Arrow's audio system can emulate the AMG V8 or even a current Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 car.

While Mercedes says that the concept is designed to provide driving pleasure, and it mimics a vintage racer, the company has not left out interior luxury. Inside the fold-forward single-seat cockpit is saddle leather for the seat and steering wheel, a projected rear-view camera, and Airscarf back of the neck warming.

The original managed an average of 432.7 km/h on the Autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. No word on if Benz will try the same with this new concept model.
