Petro-Canada has just announced a new plan to build a nearly nationwide network of EV chargers. Construction is set to start this spring.
The network of fast-charging stations will start with more than 50 EV stations located from Nova Scotia to BC. The chargers will be built at existing Petro-Canada filling stations along the Trans-Canada Highway. Construction of the network is set to start this spring with the sites opening over the next year., though Petro-Canada hasn't revealed the list of locations yet. The first, a test site located in Milton, ON, is already open.
"With more than 1,800 retail and wholesale locations across the country, we have the network in place to build Canada’s first electric highway, providing coast-to-coast EV charging for our customers," said Kris Smith, executive VP for Petro-Canada parent Suncorp.
The sites will offer DC fast-charging with the CHAdeMO and CCS/SAR connectors, which will allow them to charge most EVs. They can provide up to a 200 kW charge. That's enough to give most vehicles an 80 percent top-up in half an hour. The new charging stations can also be upgraded to 350 kW charging with future upgrades when that technology becomes available.
