Mazda has just revealed an all-new crossover at the Geneva Motor Show. The CX-30 slots into the lineup as sort of a CX-3 coupe crossover, fitting in size-wise between the CX-3 and CX-5.
If the CX-30 name seems a bit odd, that's probably because there's already a CX-4. It was introduced around three years ago, available exclusively in China. It's also a slightly misleading name, since the CX-4 is actually larger than the CX-5.
The CX-30, though, is not. At 4,395 mm long and 1,795 mm wide, it fits in to almost exactly the middle of the CX-3 and CX-5. 120 mm longer than the smaller and 145 shorter than the middle. It's also 30 mm wider than the CX-3.
Mazda says that the CX-30 is aimed at customers who want the urban-friendly dimensions of the CX-3 but need more space and practicality. There's 430 L of space in the rear cargo area, up nearly 25 percent from the CX-3. Mazda says this one will "comfortably seat four adults," something the CX-3 cannot claim.
The automaker says that the new crossover uses a "more mature" version of its Kodo design language. It's a little less aggressive than the CX-5, and a little more grown-up looking than the CX-3. The interior retains Mazda's current design, though it angles the infotainment screen more toward the driver and sets it further down into the dash. Interior offerings include premium materials like the leather and wood trims available on the company's other crossovers.
Powering the CX-30 are Mazda's latest Skyactiv engines, including the Skyactiv X compression-ignition gas engine. Mazda hasn't released specifications for Canada yet, or which engines we'll get exactly, but in Europe all gas CX-30s will use a new M-Hybrid 24-volt mild hybrid system. Mazda says it adds electric torque and smoother stop-start operation to help save fuel.
The CX-30 should go on sale globally, starting in Europe this summer.
