Mitsubishi revealed the electrified Engelberg Tourer crossover concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The new concept showcases Mitsubishi's new Dendo Drive House technology that lets owners plug their house into their car, rather than the other way around.
If you're wondering about the name, Engelberg is a ski resort in the central region of Switzerland, known for panoramic views and off-piste runs.
The three-row crossover is a twin-motor, all-wheel drive, plug-in hybrid. Mitsubishi says that "it offers high levels of running performance that allow the driver to enjoy driving in any weather condition or on any road surface." It also has a pretty sweet electronically operated ski box fitted to the roof which can make your ski day a little more enjoyable.
The PHEV powertrain features a 2.4 L engine and a 20 kWh drive battery. It's a revised version of the system found in the Outlander PHEV. The gas engine can run in hybrid mode, acting like a generator instead of directly driving the vehicle. Mitsubishi says using this larger engine allows for quieter operation and improved fuel economy.
The automaker says that the Engelberg Tourer has a 70 km range on the WLTP test cycle and a total cruise range of over 700 km.
One motor drives the front axle and another drives the rear, allowing all-wheel drive capability without a physical connection running up the middle of the vehicle. It also features Super All-Wheel Control integrated dynamics and Active Yaw Control torque vectoring on the front wheels.
Mitsubishi will be using the Engelberg Tourer to demonstrate its new Dendo Drive House system which utilizes a bi-directional charger connected to solar panels that charge the vehicle along with domestic storage batteries by day. It can then send that power back to the house for powering appliances at night or provide household electricity in an emergency. Mitsubishi is planning to launch the system later this year in Japan and Europe.
