Google Maps Adding Speed Info, Photo Radar to Alerts

If you've been looking for a way to avoid fixed speed cameras and getting a ticket in the mail, then we've got two ways that can help you out. The first one is the tried-and-true method of not speeding. The second is a new one. Google Maps is adding photo radar cameras to its list of road traffic alerts.

Google Maps already provides real-time alerts when you use it for navigation. Construction, traffic, helpful things like that. Now new features are being introduced that add speed limits, and speed cameras, to the list of features.

The feature, which is still being rolled out, will tell drivers on their map of upcoming cameras, as well as provide an audio alert if the user has those turned on. Speed limit information will show on the map as well, letting drivers know the limit for the stretch of road they're on.

So what do police think of the idea? The Calgary Police Service says it's useful to them. "The biggest thing we love … is we place those (cameras) by collision statistics,” Sgt. Joerg Gottschling of the Calgary Police Service traffic section told The Canadian Press. “If we do a new site, if we are going to install a new camera, the next site is always selected by the next highest crash site. He added that all drivers using the map service will get a notification of the camera, in both directions, even if the camera is only pointing one way.

Of course, if you're planning on using Google Maps, make sure you're using it through your in-car infotainment system or a proper handsfree device holder. Because no app will prevent you getting a ticket if you're using your phone behind the wheel.
